Light Therapy

SAD and Light Therapy
Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD, winter blues, or seasonal depression, is a medical condition caused by the seasonal change in the amount of available sunlight.

People who suffer from this mood disorder experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the darker winter months.

Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change or when they find themselves deprived of natural daylight. Loss of natural light can be the result of long winters, rainy weather, night shift work, airplane travel and subsequent jet lag, or just a lifestyle that dictates too much time indoors.
Symptoms of winter blues, or winter depression, are sluggishness, sleep problems, memory loss, the inability to concentrate and loss of mental acuity.
Sufferers of SAD may find themselves generally feeling lethargic and tired and the subsequent craving sweets and carbohydrates and winter weight gain is a common side effect.
Therapeutic light systems that deliver natural sunshine have been shown to be an effective treatment for these symptoms.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, winter blues, or seasonal depression, is a medical condition caused by the seasonal change in the amount of available sunlight.

  • SAD affects as much as 10% of the population.
  • SAD is most pronounced in the north, with a greater daylight variance from summer to winter.
  • SAD affects women more than men by almost a 3 to 1 ratio.
  • SAD's symptoms in its milder form- "winter blues' includes a lack of energy, depression, listlessness, and food cravings for sweets and carbohydrates.
  • SAD's more debilitating form includes problems sleeping, change in appetite or weight, loss of memory, lack of concentration, severe depression and confusion

FULL SPECTRUM LIGHTING
Verilux® full spectrum lamps have set the standard for natural, "daylight" lighting for more than 50 years. All Verilux lamps use full spectrum light to enhance the clarity and contrast of reading materials, projects, craft work and task work. Full spectrum light improves vision while reducing eyestrain and fatigue. All lamps are available in a wide variety of models and colors. Our patented Flicker-Free ballast and Optix™ glare control filter are unique in the industry, delivering daylight intensity, full spectrum light, without glare.
Traditional Incandescent vs. Full Spectrum Lighting
The best light for reading, tasks, artwork or crafts is bright, natural, and glare free. Full spectrum light achieves this by delivering the "full" or "natural" light spectrum to your eye. Typical incandescent bulbs produce light only from the "warmer" red, yellow and orange parts of the visual spectrum, while completely missing the "cooler" blue portion of the spectrum. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a general acceptance of poor, yellowish light as the "norm" in homes and workplaces alike.
Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Technology
The full line of Verilux lamps utilizes our patented 27 watt "four finger" compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). This unique CFL, produces the equivalent of 150 watts of full spectrum light, lasts up to 10 times longer (10,000 hours) than incandescent bulbs, and consumes 80% less energy. Verilux is proud to have led the lighting industry in the design and development of compact fluorescent technology. To emphasize our commitment to CFL, we recently introduced a new line of spiral compact fluorescent light bulbs for use throughout your home or office
The Natural Spectrum Story
Shedding light on Full Spectrum
It’s a scientific fact, our eyes function most effectively in natural daylight. Verilux® Full Spectrum lighting was developed with this in mind. Verilux uses a specific spectral power distribution (SPD)  of visible light to enhance the clarity and contrast of reading material, projects, craft and task work. It is this SPD that improves vision while reducing eyestrain and fatigue. The specific spectral power distribution determines the behavioural response of the eye's pupil- not the intensity (or light output, called lumens) of the light.
It is this refinement of the light to include the best of natural daylight without any harmful or unnecessary wavelengths that allows you to see greater contrast and truer colors with less effort and irritation. The result is the most visually efficient light possible. In addition, Verilux has a patented flicker-free ballast and Optix glare control filter-both features developed to improve the delivery of our SPD light.

A few of the numerous advantages of Verilux® Full Spectrum light:

  • Makes visually demanding tasks easier to perform.
  • Brings the brilliance of true colors to life.
  • Reduces glare, thereby lessening eye fatigue and strain.
  • Helps with reading, tasks, artwork and crafting.

Visual spectrum
Scientifically tuned to the human eye™
The human eyeThe human eye is equipped to process the full spectrum of nature’s visible light. Key components making this possible include two types of photo receptors called rods and cones. Rods are most sensitive to blue-green light but transmit essential black and white information to the brain.
Each of the three types of cone-shaped cells is sensitive to the long, medium or short wavelengths of light, transmitting valuable information for color interpretation by the brain; L-cones capture reds, M-cones capture greens and S-cones capture blues.
Verilux® Full Spectrum lighting was developed on the basic premise that the eyes’ photoreceptors work best together when exposed to the full and balanced spectrum of visible light. With balanced stimuli, your brain is more efficient in interpreting the wide range of information needed to create an accurate mental representation of the world around you.
Full spectrum light provides readers with better contrast, clarity and color separation. Our older customers report that full spectrum light helps them overcome the visual impairment of cataracts and macular degeneration. In general, and for all ages, full spectrum light allows one to read longer, with better concentration and without headaches or eyestrain.
